Checking Account Fees to Watch Out For

5 min readUpdated regularly

Monthly maintenance, overdraft, and out-of-network ATM fees quietly cost the average account holder hundreds a year.

Our verdict

A fee-free checking account is almost always available — don't settle for one that isn't

Between online banks and credit unions, genuinely fee-free checking is widely available. There's little reason to accept monthly maintenance fees in 2026.

Monthly maintenance fees

Many checking accounts charge $5–$15 per month unless you meet a condition — a minimum balance, a direct deposit threshold, or a minimum number of transactions. Read the fine print on how the waiver works; some conditions are easy to hit consistently, others are not.

Overdraft and NSF fees

Overdraft fees, often $30–$35 per occurrence, are one of the most avoidable costs in banking. Many banks now offer opt-in overdraft protection that simply declines a transaction instead of charging a fee, or a small cushion before any fee applies — worth confirming before you open an account.

ATM network fees

Out-of-network ATM withdrawals can cost you twice — once from your own bank, once from the ATM operator. If you withdraw cash often, prioritize a bank with a large fee-free ATM network or one that reimburses out-of-network fees.
